âPastor Anderson,â Mary began.
âDave,â the older man corrected.
âDave,â she said, still not entirely comfortable with the concept of calling a member of the clergy by his first name. Up until this summer, sheâd seen people like Dave Anderson as almost a different species. High, lofty souls who didnât bother with the likes of âsinnersâ like herself. Not that she thought of herself as a sinner. She was pretty proud of all her accomplishments then. Back before sheâd realized âachievementâ didnât always translate into âhappiness.â
It was, in fact, happiness she was speaking ofâat least to Dave. âYou know, Dave,â she continued carefully, âIâm worried about how much people are expecting out of this Christmas drama.â
He smiled. âYouâll do fine. Actually, when you think about it, you canât help but do fine. Youâre our first drama coordinator, so folks donât have anyone to compare you to. You canât help but improve us. And they like you alreadyâI can tell.â
How to say this? âItâs not the drama Iâm worried about. Itâs the...well, the result youâre looking for. Donât you think town unityâs kind of a high expectation for a little church drama?â
Pastor Dave sat back in his chair. âThatâs because youâre expecting it to be a little church drama. It will be church, it will be drama, but I guarantee it wonât be little. Complications might be just what the doctor ordered in this case.â His eyebrows lowered in concern. âI want you to pour your creative energies into making this as all-consuming as possible.â
âArenât there more direct ways to resolve the townâs conflict?â
âI suppose there would beâif the town was willing to admit they had a conflict. Most of them want a big Christmas extravaganza to make them feel good. Just you and I and a few other wise folk realize they need something to agree on to take their minds off the many disagreements.â
âWhat about Mac and Howard?â
The pastor chuckled. âI think Mac knows he stirred up a hornetâs nest. He enjoys itâalways has been one to whip things up a bit. I think Howard feels the conflict, but heâs likely to read it all wrong. He feels attacked because I think heâd much rather change on his own terms, not on those of someone like Mac.â
âBut Howard was bound to retire someday.â Mary leaned one elbow on the corner of Daveâs desk. She was still sorting out the complexities of âsimple little Middleburg.â
âIâm not so sure Howardâs caught on to that truth yet. Heâs been mayor for so long he may not remember how to be anything else. Weâve got sixth-graders whoâve never known Howard as anything but mayor. You have to respect that.â
âAll things considered, Iâm not so sure a Christmas pageant is the way to cope. Weâre sticking a tiny bandage on a great big wound here.â
âMiss Thorpe, you ever been a parent?â He got up from his chair and walked over to his office windows overlooking the preschool. âEver given a toddler a bandage?â
âIâm sure I have at some point.
